No time no long goodbyes

Saturday, 18 August 2007

Friday night — an exhilarating session of Quake 4 and Counterstrike, in salutary farewell for Kin Yan, who goes back today. Take care, will ya? I realise that as I age I tend to sleep less and less the night before the camp. Given my procrastinating nature and how I haven’t really gotten my things in order at the time of writing this (close to 5AM), I guess I’ll skip sleep just this once.

Lack of sleep is a magical thing. You generally grow more articulate (something about sleep deprivation being equal to a certain amount of blood alcohol) and chatty, less reserved. Time seems to take longer and longer. Short-term memory goes. What was I talking about? Oh, yeah.

I don’t know why I go to the Young Writer’s Camps anymore. Maybe it’s a force of habit. I’ve learned all I’ve needed to know these past few years: 4, 5, maybe 6 camps that I’ve been to. Faces have came and went. There’s probably something along the lines of nostalgia, a sentimental maudlin mood that usually accompanies our meeting and parting. There’s the comfort in being around people who pick up puns and wordplay faster than the norm. Or maybe not.

This will probably be my last time attending the YWC as a participant. Was supposed to help out but exams stood in the way, although I’m not too bothered about it myself. With Ethan and Alicia attending this time round, and what with the inevitable group leader mantle I expect and dread to shoulder later on, I guess it’s a good “last camp” as any. Here’s to hoping I don’t run out of lip balm while I’m up there.

Black holes and revelations

Monday, 9 July 2007

Catharsis at a table: there were four. Then there were three. And then now there were four again. Immediately after Hon Chien pointed out to me how in saying grace, my choice of words, “separated”, seemed fairly odd, but seeing how it was ages since the four of us had sat down at a table together, I thought that barely did justice to it at all. What’s life without a little dramatisation? Not a really colourful one, surely.

It was a guys night out at Sakura Crystal. The much awaited private celebration of Lukas’ 21st. For all its hype and anticipation, at least on my end, what transpired over the table exceeded my expectations. Almost-gossip. Truth. Revelations. Hilarity. Scandal. Precious conversation forever etched in memory. Things said that, as Jon paused to explain in his deadpan manner, would remain within the four walls country. Or planet. Or solar system, even. Is it a good thing that I’ve laughed more in the span of four hours than I have for half a year? I don’t suppose there’s the need to compare.

‘Twas the night before A-Levels

Sunday, 13 May 2007

Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. Anyway. The reason for this blog being half-dead is all due to how I’ve been immersing myself in other stuff. Those who actually bother to talk to me ever so often and have asked about the lack of updates should know about it (in other words, those that matter know, those that don’t, don’t).

on a random note, if you can grasp 100% of both references (and by both I mean not just one character) in this picture, consider yourself blessed. those that don’t, well, sux2bu.

Oh, and studies. Begins tomorrow, ends a month later at 14th June. See you then. I hope.

My…. what?

Wednesday, 4 April 2007

Got this off Karcy’s post. “Existential version” made me lol, all the more because it’s sad how it’s true.

Fitting treatment of a shallow, mind-numbingly stupid thing — do you like this song? Like, really really like, not just “oh it’s a cool song” like, but a “this is my bestest song in the whole wide world! ^_^” like. Have you studied the lyrics carefully and still admit to loving a song like this with all your heart?

If that’s true, then here is what you do. Stand in front of a wall. Assume a bowing posture such that all you can see is the ground. Now run into that wall in front of you with your head still in that position. Repeat till you lose consciousness, and/or obtain a cerebral haemorrhage.

Cheers to Alanis Morisette for making an inane song into something golden. Best natural selector if I ever saw one.

P.S: If you’re fortunate enough to have lived such a sheltered life you’ve never heard of the original in all its brainless, blazing glory, here’s a tip — don’t. You’ll want that 5 minutes of your life back when you’re done with it.

Melonpan

Monday, 19 February 2007

I found out yesterday that Midvalley’s in-house bakery in JJ sells melonpan.Melon buns!

Naturally, I was delighted, nevermind Dad muttering under his breath about dinner later, how it’d ruin my appetite to say nothing of the ice-cream he was about to buy us while he shook his head, or Fern frowning and calling me “greedy” for buying two of the little buns (she settled for one mayo hotdog).

A quick note about melonpan: I watched this anime called Shakugan no Shana, which had a heroine called Shana that went around eating melonpan for a huge part of the series. She’d eat it at lunch, for snacks, in childhood flashbacks — probably for 3/4ths of her meals and significant on-screen time, for that matter. And look really adorable while doing it, too.

Lamplight of the season

Thursday, 15 February 2007

It’s the middle of the month already? How time flies…

This looks like something from Madeline L'Engel's books. The drawing style.
…literally. You don’t want to know what was the context of this was, either.

About the new theme: I was, in all honesty, tremendously elated at my theme request finally being chosen after months of waiting. Then some killjoy had to say “you hardly blog le… -_-“, so I guess I’m under orders to. Not like I wouldn’t have (they chose my suggestion to implement this, out of the ton of requests, and first to boot!) anyway, but yeah. Can hardly be bothered to sit down and rack my head for something out of the ordinary, since the weather, well.

In other news

Thursday, 1 February 2007

First things first, because it happens to be in front of my college and I’ll be heading over after Socio tomorrow. ‘ray for cheap books. I can afford to buy something out of Kino or Borders the same way I can afford to casually waltz over to Towers, choose a CD from the racks, pay and walk out — which is not a lot. More of like “hardly ever” ” for birthdays and Christmas”, so here’s to hope of a good selection at the sale… although that metaphor’s invalid given how I don’t buy music for myself. Anyway.

Because good things don't come near my college... not always, anyway
no witty caption this time because there’s nothing funny about almost-free books

What I did in 31 days, in no particular order:

  • Ping-pong (read: massive improvement)
  • Writing for R.AGE
  • Heroes
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Death Note 2
